Carnival of Debt Reduction

A blog carnival about reducing consumer debt

Flashback: Know thy spending self

Kirby on Finance hosted Carnival of Debt Reduction #37, and this Flashback is from Get Rich Slowly entitled The Psychology of Spending.

JD points out:

You cannot learn to control your spending until you understand what money means to you. Begin to notice your thought process and attitudes as you shop. What are you thinking? Why are you buying the things you’re buying?

Everyone spends money for some reason.  It could be because of a careful, well-thought-out process.  It could be because of habit.  It could be to fill a void.

If spending patterns are becoming financially destructive — meaning that they’re causing debt — then the pattern will be changed only when the underlying issues are addressed.  Unhealthy views on spending need to be changed.

Out-of-control spending is only a symptom of a problem.  Knowing what the problem is goes a long way toward curing it.

—This was well put.
I couldn’t agree less. I believe that if you know the reasons as to why you’re really making a purchase for something, you will really be more careful about spending. I also thing that your financial situation is quite a clear reflection of how you know and deal with yourself. So if you really spend much because of retail therapy, then it somewhat indicates that you’re never satisfied and you still haven’t found out what will make you content.

Great post. Thanks for sharing! :) More power!!!
